I live in West Bridgford and have done for 30 years, and over the last three to four years I've spent a lot of time on gym floors listening to personal trainers talk.
A bit about training, but mostly I'm interested in their work. Good trainers, people who genuinely change lives, telling me they can't get seen by the people living ten minutes from them. Their gym doesn't promote them as well as they'd like. They don't have time to market because they're coaching six sessions a day. And when they do try, Google buries them under sponsored results from the big chains and wealthy trainers to appear slightly higher than other trainers. Same postcode, nobody finds them.
And what tends to happen next follows a fairly predictable pattern: they turn to Instagram. Reels, hashtags, follower counts..... The "influencers and gurus" tell them this is how you build a business now, so they spend weeks, months and years chasing numbers and putting out the same content as every other trainer who fell into the same vicious trap, growing a community that's scattered across the world instead of the community on their doorstep. And here's the part that gets me: none of it fixes anything for the people around them. A resident three roads away still has no idea this trainer exists.
Worse than that, it shuts out an entire group of potential clients completely. The people who'd often benefit most from a personal trainer, and who have the time, the motivation and the money for proper coaching, are largely not on these platforms at all. If a trainer's whole business lives on Instagram, those residents never see any of it. They ask a friend instead, or they search, and we already know how that goes.
That always struck me as backwards. The person who could help you most is often the one with the smallest marketing budget, doing backflips for an algorithm to reach people they'll never train, never meet, while the neighbours who could actually train with them every week scroll past in silence.
Then there's the other side of it, the side we don't talk about enough. We're lucky here. Genuinely lucky, some parts of the country would love to have our problem. But when you've got gyms, studios, classes in parks and church halls, reformer pilates, independent trainers, national chains, all within a couple of miles, the problem stops being access and becomes something else. Where do you even start?
If you Google it, you get whoever paid the most. That's not a search result, it's an auction.
Some people try the local Facebook groups instead, and it's easy to see the appeal. The "can anyone recommend a personal trainer?" posts come up constantly, and the responses roll in fast. But look at what's actually happening. There are trainers who spend all day in these groups, ready to pounce the moment someone asks. Friends and family chip in, recommending their PT friend or family member. The recommendations come from a good place, but they're anecdotal, and the whole thing ends up first come, first served. The resident goes with whoever replied quickest, not whoever's actually right for them.
So NG2 Kinetic is my answer to both sides. It's a local platform, built for West Bridgford, Edwalton and the surrounding NG2 postcode, where the playing field is actually level. No sponsored slots anywhere. Profiles load in a random order every time, so a trainer who joined last week gets the same visibility as everyone else. A solo studio is presented with the same care as a big gym. Nobody can buy their way above anybody. And nobody has to dance for an algorithm to be found by the people around the corner.
Every personal trainer on the platform is onboarded, vetted and verified. Why? it's about trust, finding the right PT or gym the first time is so important. If you're picking someone to help you get stronger, you should at least know they're real, qualified and based where they say they are.
I definitely recommend checking out Sync, this is a really cool feature and I'm really proud of it, essentially you tell it what you're actually after and it aims to recommend 1-3 trainers (or gyms) that fit your goals and needs. A shortlist, with the guesswork taken out. And yes, Sync is technically an algorithm too. The difference is what it's there to do. Google's is there to sell ads. Instagram's is there to keep you scrolling. Sync's only job is to answer the question you asked it and for free!
I'm someone who lives here, trains here, and got tired of watching good people on both sides of the gym floor struggle to find each other. Residents who don't know where to start, and trainers who can't be found. I can't fix the fitness industry, but I can at least try to make it better in our area, and that's what NG2 Kinetic is built to do.
